School Programs
Cape Pottery & Supply welcomes schools, homeschool groups, and youth programs for hands-on pottery experiences in our Hyannis studio. These programs are a wonderful opportunity for schools, homeschool groups, art classes, enrichment programs, and youth organizations to bring students into a real pottery studio where they can learn, explore, and create in an inspiring environment.
Our school programs can be designed around the age, experience level, and goals of each group. Students may explore beginner-friendly hand-building projects, texture and surface design, glazing, paint-your-own pottery, or other clay-based activities that encourage imagination, problem-solving, fine motor skills, and creative confidence. Each experience is guided in a way that feels approachable, organized, and engaging for young makers.
Working with clay gives students the chance to slow down, use their hands, think three-dimensionally, and experience the joy of making something from start to finish. Along the way, they learn about form, texture, pattern, balance, patience, and the transformation that happens when clay moves through the drying, glazing, and kiln-firing process.
Cape Pottery & Supply provides a professional, fully equipped studio setting with thoughtful instruction and a focus on safe studio practices. Our space also includes an air filtration system designed to help reduce airborne clay and silica dust, supporting a cleaner and more comfortable environment for students, teachers, instructors, and studio guests.

Find Your Fit
Beginner Level
New to clay or curious about learning the pottery wheel? Introduction to the Wheel is the required first class for anyone with no prior wheel-throwing experience. This foundational three-week workshop is designed to help new students feel comfortable, confident, and prepared before moving into other classes, workshops, or open studio time.
Taught by a rotating group of experienced instructors, this course introduces the essential skills of working with clay, including studio basics, preparing your clay, centering, opening, pulling walls, shaping simple forms, and understanding the rhythm of the wheel. Students will receive guided instruction, hands-on practice, and supportive feedback as they begin learning the process of throwing on the wheel.
Because wheel throwing requires proper technique, safety awareness, and an understanding of studio flow, students with no clay experience must complete an Introduction to the Wheel workshop before registering for additional wheel-based worshop, specialty workshops, or purchasing open studio passes.

Intermediate Level
Already taken an introductory wheel-throwing class and are you ready to keep building your skills?
Next Step Wheel is designed for students who have completed a beginner wheel class and want more guided practice on the wheel.
This class is the perfect bridge between your first introduction to clay and more independent studio work. Students will continue practicing the essential steps of wheel throwing, including preparing clay, centering, opening, pulling walls, shaping forms, and developing more control throughout the throwing process.
With supportive instruction and hands-on practice, students will have the opportunity to refine their technique, improve consistency, and gain confidence creating functional forms such as cups, bowls, small vessels, and other beginner-friendly pieces. The workshop will also focus on trimming techniques, helping students learn how to finish the foot, balance the shape, and bring a more polished look to their pottery.
Because this workshop builds on basic wheel-throwing knowledge, it is best suited for students who have already taken the introductory workshop and feel ready for continued practice with guidance.

Advanced & Specialized
Designed for hand-building and wheel-throwing students who want to feel more confident in the glaze lab, this three-hour hands-on workshop focuses on the essential techniques for preparing, applying, and understanding glaze with greater success.
Participants will begin with proper greenware preparation before moving into glaze application methods, including dipping, pouring, and brushing.
The workshop will cover the importance of achieving the correct glaze thickness for each application method, helping students better understand how consistency, coverage, and technique affect the final fired result.
Students will also explore how to layer different glaze combinations, use wax resist to isolate specific areas of a piece, and approach the glazing process with more intention and control. Additional surface materials, including slips, engobes, oxides, and underglazes, will also be discussed to help expand each maker’s understanding of surface design and finishing possibilities.
This workshop is ideal for both newer and experienced potters who want to improve their glazing skills, gain confidence with materials, and better understand how thoughtful surface preparation and application can transform finished ceramic work.

INTRODUCTION TO HAND BUILDING
Hand building is one of the most creative, approachable, and versatile ways to work with clay. Unlike wheel throwing, hand building allows you to shape clay directly with your hands, using simple tools and timeless techniques to create both functional and decorative ceramic pieces.
This introductory hand-building course is designed for beginners who are new to working in a clay studio. Students will learn the essential foundations of clay handling, studio safety, basic construction techniques, proper joining methods, surface texture, form development, and the beginning steps of creating successful hand-built ceramic work.
Like our Introduction to the Wheel workshop, this course is required for beginners who have never worked in a clay studio before.
Once students have completed this foundational class, they may continue exploring clay through open studio passes, additional hand-building workshops, and more advanced creative projects.

FAMILY TIME
Looking for a fun, creative, and memorable family activity on Cape Cod? Our Sunday Paint Your Own Pottery workshops are designed for families, kids, friends, and makers of all ages who want to enjoy time together in a relaxed studio setting.
This is a wonderful option for anyone who wants to experience pottery without needing a class, wheel experience, or any prior knowledge of clay. Simply choose your pottery piece, select your colors, and enjoy the process of painting something uniquely your own.
During our Sunday afternoon open paint sessions, guests will have access to the studio, glazes, brushes, and the basic materials needed to decorate their chosen pieces. For a small studio fee, plus the cost of the pottery pieces you select, you can spend time creating colorful, personalized ceramics in a welcoming and inspiring environment.
Choose from a wide variety of pre-bisqued pottery pieces, including mugs, bowls, plates, decorative items, seasonal pieces, keepsakes, and giftable ceramics.
Once your piece is painted, our studio team will clear glaze and fire it in the kiln, transforming your design into a finished ceramic piece that is ready to use, display, or give as a handmade gift.
Finished pottery will be available for pickup at a later date after the firing process is complete.

Explore the beautiful process of printing on clay using silkscreen stencils, layered color, stamps, and underglaze techniques. In this creative hands-on workshop, students will learn how to bring pattern, imagery, texture, and personal design onto the surface of clay before shaping it into a finished ceramic form.
Using white clay as your canvas, you will begin by working on a slab and learning how to apply color through silkscreen stencils.
Students will use ceramic inks and have the opportunity to custom mix their own colors, allowing for a more personal and expressive surface design. You will be able to experiment with layering, placement, contrast, and composition as you build a one-of-a-kind printed surface.
A wide variety of stencils and stamps will be available to explore, giving each student the freedom to create a piece that feels unique to their own style.

Open Studio at Cape Pottery & Supply allows students and makers to continue practicing, creating, and developing their skills outside of a structured class or workshop. It is a dedicated time to return to the studio, work at your own pace, finish projects, explore new ideas, and spend more time with clay in a supportive creative environment.
Open Studio is ideal for students who have already completed an introductory wheel throwing or hand-building workshop and feel comfortable working independently. While this is not a formal class, our studio team is available to help with basic questions, studio flow, and general guidance as you continue building confidence with the materials, tools, and process.
During Open Studio, makers have access to a professional, fully equipped clay workspace designed for creativity, focus, and hands-on practice. Whether you are refining your wheel throwing, trimming pieces, hand-building forms, adding surface texture, or preparing work for the next stage, Open Studio gives you the time and space to keep growing.
Because pottery is a process that takes patience and repetition, Open Studio is an important part of developing skill. The more time you spend with clay, the more comfortable your hands become with centering, shaping, joining, trimming, and understanding how each piece moves through the ceramic process.

What should I wear to workshop?
Pottery is a hands-on, messy art! We recommend wearing comfortable clothes and shoes you don't mind getting a little clay on. Aprons are provided in the studio, but trimmed fingernails are suggested for better control.
FAQ & Policies
When can I pick up my finished work?
Firing takes 2-3 weeks. We will email you once your finished glaze-fired ceramics are available for pickup at our Hyannis studio.
Can I bring outside clay or glazes?
To protect our kilns and other students' work, we only allow clay and glazes purchased through Cape Pottery and Supply to be fired in our facility. This ensures chemical compatibility and safe firing temperatures.
Do you offer private events?
Yes! We offer private wheel throwing and hand-building parties for birthdays, team building, and more. Please reach out via email or phone for current pricing and studio availability.
Are materials included?
Most introductory workshops include a starter amount of clay and all necessary glazes. Additional clay can be purchased at our retail shop. We stock a wide range of stoneware and porcelain compatibility tested for our kilns.
What is your cancellation policy?
Cancellations made 7 days or more in advance of the workshop start date will receive a full refund. Within 7 days, we offer studio credit. Same-day cancellations or miss workshop are non-refundable.
